Myself as a Leader Essay

Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve. It’s a common and quite simple word but rather very difficult word to define due to its complexity and multifaceted composition. Leadership can be defined as an act of influencing activities of an organized group in its quest to set goals and also to achieve certain goals. A leader is someone that many people look to for direction, guidance, and inspiration, so it is important for our leaders to have the aptitude to make difficult decisions and to know and do what is right for the people. Some people believe that a leader is born that way and there is no way, practicing or studying, to create a leader. They are wrong because inside of each and every one of us there is a leader waiting to be awake and holding on an opportunity to come out. Leadership can mean many things to different people, but moral purpose in leadership should be based on fairness, ethics, and integrity.

                To begin on my path to leadership, I must look deep into my own personal being and decide what I value most and what I must do each day to feel whole. Being a leader is more difficult than what an individual would expect. Influencing others is not as easy as it may seem. It is a process of leading that group, and influencing them to achieve a goal. An effective leader has character, competence, compassion, and courage. “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” This quote by Vince Lombardi best describes my thoughts and experiences about leadership because hard work is how I became the leader and person I am today.

Personally, I think that the most important quality which a leader should possess is intelligence and alertness. A leader has to use his/her brain every time and also has to remain   alert with eyes and ears open otherwise he/she could easily be carried by any fraud or enemy. To me, a leader is someone who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to his or her team, and will do whatever it takes to better the team as a whole. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal.

As a leader I should also be an optimist having a positive attitude. I should not think negatively or plan something showing negative attitude. Because a person who thinks or plans something’s showing his negative attitude can never be a Leader. I should have the courage to face all the troubles or problems that faces me and the people who are following me and have the ability to solve these problems by myself instead of blaming and embarrassing others. I enjoy activities in which I can take charge, but I also want input from others who have expertise in the area to help in basing the decisions that are made, since I know I am not a specialist in all areas. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. It’s about making the people who work for you smarter, bigger, and bolder.

I believe the supreme quality for leadership is integrity. It reflects a deep commitment to do the right thing for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. Leaders with integrity are incorruptible and incapable of breaking the trust of those who have confided in them. However, I also believe a good leader must possess a combination of many varying qualities. A great leader would have integrity, vision, courage, humility, creativity, conviction, trustworthiness, fairness to mention but a few, all of which are crucial leadership qualities.

The concept of leadership is way of influencing others actions. Leadership is concept usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Leaders are known to be very passionate and caring toward others. Most leaders enjoy interacting with people and caring for other individuals. The values of a leader show the qualities of that leader. Some people have a misconception that only those people who are physically strong can become good leaders, but this is not the fact. A leader may not be physically strong but he needs to be mentally strong and firm in decisions.

Leadership is a quality hidden in the personality of a human being. Human personality is very complex and it is very difficult to grade individuals according to one’s personality. Leadership, on the other hand, depends on the organic structure of the personality which includes experience, skill, responsibility, intelligence, power of organizing people and social interaction. Leadership is an indispensable activity, which every leader has tap perform for directing the people, working under him. It is the ability of the Leader to induce subordinates to work with confidence and zeal. In other words “Leadership is the process by which an leader imaginatively directs, guides and influence the work of others in choosing and attaining specified goals by mediating between the individuals and the organization in such as manner, that both will obtain maximum satisfaction. However effective leadership demands that we anticipate all changes whether minor or major and respond to them promptly to allow growth to take place. On other hand however, it is also important to understand some of the attributes associated with bad leadership in life so as to avoid them completely when one is aspiring to be a leader.

To conclusion, an effective leader must have character, competence, compassion, and courage. These characteristics are the components of one’s personality that gives them the capability to successfully lead a group of people in the right direction. Compassion is a fairness and respect for co-workers and followers. Courage is both mental and physical strength to do what is right even though it may be the hardest. And finally, I as good leader must be faithful to my group members and activities. This in turn, will result in an atmosphere of assurance among the followers. Having faith in self abilities and the world around him/her the leader gains inspiration and also inspires others in the process. These characteristics are what makes a leader worth following and worthy of a leadership position.
